Safari 3 Beta for Windows First Impressions

June 11th, 2007 Posted in Blog Post, Videos

I downloaded the beta of Safari 3 for Windows. The video above doesn’t cover all of the points below (and may not be live yet):

  • Ctrl-Enter doesn’t automatically add “.com” to whatever you type into the address bar. This is a common shortcut for Windows users in IE and Firefox and should been included in the final release.
  • It appears to load web pages fast as long as there aren’t a lot of plug-ins on the page.
  • Automatically tries to match URLs as you type. I don’t know if this is good or bad yet.
  • It did not prompt me to import any bookmarks from IE or Firefox. This should be included in the final release.
  • The browser window can only be resized using the little tab in the lower, right-hand corner. Again, Windows users expect to be able to resize a window by grabbing any edge. This should be added in the final release.
  • I’m not given the option to choose where I want to download a linked file. I don’t want to clutter up my desktop or a folder I want to choose where each file should be saved.
  • All-in-all I’d say this a good attempt by Apple but they should realize that Windows users don’t want to have OS X nuances in their browser. By taking away basic functionality that everyone who uses Windows is accustomed to, Apple will not have a successful product in the Windows market. Apple’s claims of additional security have yet to be tested and I’m sure within 15-30 days there will be an exploit available which will test Apple’s commitment to the Windows platform. the browser is fast but lacks the “snap” of Firefox when loading pages with plug-ins (like mine). It’s faster than IE6 (I don’t use IE7) but not as fast as Firefox as far as I can tell.

I’ll have more to talk about in the podcast. Also look for additional videos on my YouTube channel.
