Tutorial Tuesday: Adding New MIME Types in IIS
February 26th, 2008 Posted in Podcast, TuesdayIn this podcast I talk about how to add new MIME types to IIS 6.0 so that you can open Office 2007 documents.
There are two ways to add new MIME types to IIS 6.0: through the IIS Manager snap-in or by editing the MetaBase.xml file. I recommend using the snap-in because it doesn’t require you to reboot the server. Detailed instructions below the break.

Here’s how to do it:

Open up IIS Manager and right-click on “Web Sites” the select “Properties”

Click on the “HTTP Headers” tab

Click the button labeled “MIME types…”

If you have any additional MIME types already defined you’ll see them here. If you don’t see the extension you’re looking for click “New”

Add the extension and MIME type. Click “OK” and continue clicking OK. Make sure you apply this to all of the web sites hosted on your server. If you only want to apply these changes to individual web sites you’ll need to drill down and make the changes there.
Additional resources:
- Microsoft KB 936496 has extensions and MIME types supported in IIS 7.0
- Alexander Groß’ website tell’s you how to affect these changes by modifying the MetaBase.xml file, this requires you to stop IIS

THANKYOU! This tutorial was so helpful. I tried this at home and my dish washer now washes, dries and puts the dishes away. HUH? What are we talking about?!?

Yeah. This one was heavy-duty. Most people probably didn’t get much out of it.
