Gary Gygax - Hope he made the saving throw
March 7th, 2008 Posted in Friday, Podcast
In today’s podcast I mostly talk about the passing of Gary Gygax and how he influenced my life and the lives of many other geeks.
The image to the left is of me at Disney in 1985, the year I got my Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set. I’ll never forget bringing that box home with the two paperback books, dice, crayon and character sheets and playing the first adventure all by myself. My memories of first playing D&D aren’t as vivid as Wil Wheaton’s but they are sweet nonetheless. I’ve been enjoying the nostalgia that’s swept over the Internet as memories of RPG first-timers are blogged and/or podcasted. It’s the end of an era.
Also I chit-chat about upcoming interviews and guest hosts.

Your podcast brought back memories to me. I played table-top strategy games in high school and college, and in my 20’s took up D&D. Some of the most intense social interactions of my life were a half-dozen to 10 of us who would get together every week to play. We switched over to SF role playing when my buddy and I (who was also a Christian) reacted to doubts about the fantasy content of D&D but it was the same fun. I miss those days.

Thanks for taking the stroll down memory lane with me. When I was still gaming, I used it as a witnessing tool. I would go to cons and talk about being a Christian while sitting at the various gaming tables. I got some really weird looks.
