Live it today. Relive it tomorrow.

Windows Vista Product Slogan

At the time of this post the product site for Windows Vista has the image of a man taking pictures of a child having fun in the summer sun with the slogan, "Live it today. Relive it tomorrow." The phrase combined with the picture is suppose to give a feel good sensation that these are the times we will want to remember forever. That's all well intended, but here is the truth of the matter.

We all have events and actions in our past that we would like to forget. Maybe we continue to bring those unpleasant memories up when are feeling insecure or unsure of what course of action to take. Maybe we think others remember those events and action so we make decisions based out of fear for what others will think. Or, maybe we just hold onto those memories thinking that if we remember it then surely God would never forgive us for them.

The truth is there is always a brighter future ahead of us than there will ever been in the past because God doesn't want to condemn us. He wants to set us free of fear and darkness. He is the ultimate measure of goodness and righteousness and if we will seek His forgiveness then He will give it faithfully. With His forgiveness there is no one who can condemn us and so we should not live in fear of what others will think. Since His forgiveness is complete then we should not hang on to that which is no longer applicable in our lives. While we should certainly learn from our mistakes and seek the wisdom of God to make better decisions in the future, the past is not within our ability influence so we can live as if it is.

So, while I agree that we should "live it today", we should not "relive it tomorrow". Each day is fresh and new and wonderful because God is with us in all that we do and His plans are so much greater than our own.

Salvation is the promise of eternal life. So live it today, and leave your finger off of the rewind button.
