SPOILERS!!!

Postby The Jesus Geeks on 03.22.2009 9:58 PM

Hey everyone! In episode 64 I asked the question on how long until it is alright to talk about spoilers on my podcast. I want to use this forum to discuss how long we should wait to talk about all the good things in TV shows, movies, and other things we might talk about on the show. In a couple weeks I will go over what you guys have to say and then that will be our time limit on spoilers.

I'm kinda with ya but there is this guy, Jesus, who is making me feel... um what's the word... oh yea! COMPASSION! Yea, I am feeling compassion towards people in different countries or have to watch it delayed for certain reasons. So let's see what everyone else says here.

yes compassion for the souls of others and patience for their spiritual struggles are definitely things that need to be considered... but this is TV and entertainment and I would rather my podcasts be talking about relevant shows rather than ones that happened last year!

one week from air date

(as long as you make the annoucement and everyone knows it then its fair.)

I agree with Brad . One week from air and announce that you are going to spoil the show. That way anyone that doesn't want to listen to the spoilers can just pause the show or foward through that part.

Whatever time you pick, I still say you have to tell people that your going to have spoilers. You will not outlast some people .

It took me until the DVD came out before I saw "The Sixth Sense", and somehow managed not to hear about the ending or the give-aways in it. So some folf can take an inordinate amount of time. No need to hold off or them, just let 'em know whats coming so they can choose to 'duck'!!

technically isnt it only a spoiler if your giving away plot prior to folks having a chance to watch. I mean maybe the definition of the word has changed some but used to be I think the idea was a little more about devious than just discussing stuff after it happened.

Let me expand on that. Is you primary audience US listeners or foreign listeners? If you want to focus on US listeners (which I would assume is not only your focus but also the vast majority of your listeners) then your show format should work around who you want to primarily reach with your podcast.

Spoilers for movies, give at least two ta three weeks after opening weekend if it is a big movie (nobody wanted to hear about spoilers from the dark knight two weeks after its opening). smaller movies (like a recent new one KNOWING) check out the box office opening weekend, and then if its small enough and you've already seen it talk about it, nobodies going to see it so it should be fine.

Spoilers from tv shows should be a little different. Series/season finales should not be talked about until at least a month after its aired (gives people who are behind a chance to catch up, tv shows can take a while to catch up on, thats why a month). shows throughout the season can be discussed at will, unless there is some kind of major turning point in an episode that sets the stage for what happens after that episode. those ones should be about a week so that people can at least have a week to see that one episode.

Spoilers for books falls under the spoilers for movies. big books, give it a little time. smaller books that no one is really reading, go ahead and talk about it. this also goes for video games, though there really arent that many games out that have spoilers to them, so there we go.
